WORKER CARE MATERIALS AND TOOLS The Self-Assessment: Prior to Disaster Assignment brochure was developed by the British Columbia Disaster Worker Care Committee, with the support of the Provincial Emergency Program ESS Office and the ESS Advisory Committee. This screening tool is intended for use by any volunteer or staff person who has been called out to respond to a disaster. Completing a self-assessment is an important task which should be carried out prior to accepting any disaster assignment, as individual circumstances change on a regular basis regarding a person’s resilience to stress. While it may be fine to respond to a disaster one week, one’s personal situation may make it less prudent to respond to a disaster the following week. This self-assessment will help responders make a better choice regarding whether or not they should accept a disaster assignment.
The Maximizing Stress Resilience Manual was developed by the British Columbia Disaster Worker Care Committee, with the support of the Provincial Emergency Program ESS Office and the ESS Advisory Committee. This screening tool is intended for use by any organization, agency, or business, that is recruiting volunteers or staff for disaster assignments. This screening tool is designed to assist in determining the ability of new recruits to cope during an emergency or disaster. The manual provided on this website includes a series of questions to be used as a screening interview for new disaster workers. As part of the recruitment process, these questions will be made available to the candidate prior to the interview. The confidentiality of information collected is protected by one of two pieces of legislation, depending on what organization is responsible for collecting the information - either the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act or the Personal Information Protection Act [http://www.oipcbc.org/]. It is recommended that the interviewer be familiar with their responsibilities under the applicable legislation and aware of the rights of the person being interviewed, and that this information be shared with the interviewee. The manual will also be of interest to existing responders, particularly the two overviews entitled: “Trauma and Disaster Work: A Self Assessment” and “Your Health and Disasters.” A companion document, "Guide for Maximizing Stress Resilience", provides guidance in assessing the interview results. A template for recording and analyzing the interview responses is also available. The "Guide for Maximizing Stress Resilience and Analyzing the Interview" template may be obtained on written request only by representatives of recognized organizations, and must be kept confidential. Fax requests to the ESS Office at 250 952-5831.
